Before we go further into each step, here’s a quick overview of the entire process:

  • Cross-border purchase: mummbaba.com sources products from global suppliers

  • International shipping: Supplier processes and prepares order for shipping

  • Export haulage: Cargo goes from supplier to forwarder

  • Export customs clearance: Cargo is cleared for export

  • Origin handling: Cargo moves from warehouse to shipping container or plane

  • Ocean or air freight: Cargo is transported via sea or air

  • Import customs clearance: Cargo is cleared for import

  • Destination handling: Cargo moves from shipping container or plane to destination warehouse

  • Import haulage: Cargo goes from forwarder to buyer

  • Order fulfilment: Order arrives at consumer's doorstep

Step 1: Cross-border buying

MummaBaba.com purchases products from international suppliers, initiating the process with each order placed. Shipping fees are paid at checkout by the customer

Step 2: International shipping

The supplier gets the order ready for shipping internationally. They prep all the required documents and show proof of payment of shipping fees. They hand the order over to the forwarder.

Step 3: Export haulage

This involves the movement of cargo from the shipper’s premises to the forwarder’s premises. Typically to an export consolation center or an “origin warehouse” where goods are moved by road, rail, or a mix of the two.

Step 4: Export customs clearance

This is the stage where customs formalities are handled for products leaving the country, ensuring that everything meets the country-specific regulatory requirements.

At this stage, declaration documents such as the Certificate of Origin (CO) and Exporting Packing List are submitted to the relevant authorities by companies that have valid customs licenses (freight forwarder, agent, or customs broker). This step must be completed before the international shipment can be placed in the forwarder’s warehouse and be cleared for leaving the country.

Step 5: Origin handling

This stage involves all the physical handling and inspections that take place as cargo moves from the origin warehouse to being loaded on a shipping container. The freight forwarder or their agent coordinates this stage.

Step 6: Ocean or air freight

Depending on the shipping method and timelines chosen by the buyer, the products are placed on a shipping line as ocean freight or on an airline as air freight. The freight forwarder and the shipping line or airline are in charge of this process

Step 7: Import customs clearance

This process can actually start before the cargo reaches the destination country. This is another important formality where declarations are made and the relevant documents submitted for the registration or levying of any customs duties that may be incurred.  This is performed by either the freight forwarder, their agent, or a customs broker. For the cargo to leave the destination country’s customs bonded area, this process will have to be completed.

Step 8: Destination handling

Similar to what happened in the country of origin, the cargo will be handled once in the destination country. This process includes transferring the shipping container from the port, handling to reach the forwarder’s warehouse, and preparation of the cargo for consignee collection.

Step 9: Import haulage

This is the last stage of the entire process where the cargo is delivered to the consignee, involving cargo being transported to a given address. The process can be handled by either the freight forwarder or the appointed local transportation company.

Step 10: Order fulfilment

The order is now transported (typically by road) to the customer's designated address. There’s a knock on the door, and the order has arrived!
